Naturally deter fleas, mites, ticks and boost the health of your back yard chickens

Here are some natural and beautiful additions you can make to your garden beds or pots in and around your home to repel insects, boost the health and well being of your chickens, deter neighbouring cats or help dissuade your own feline friends from spraying in and around your home. 

Cats have very sensitive noses so planting rosemary in pots around your house can deter spraying cats as well as repelling ticks and fleas.

Lavender is a beautiful addition to your garden, repels cats, deters fleas and ticks as well as moths and mosquitos. 

Cats dislike the smell of Geranium so plant widely if you want to stop your feline neighbours from stopping by.

If you garden for food and want to deter cats from entering your garden plant tomatoes, onion, bananas and citrus as cats don’t like the smell of these either.

Garlic is a wonderful antibacterial and antiviral plant so can help prevent infection in your chickens, deters fleas, ticks, worms, lice and mites and is an egg laying stimulant.

Mint repels fleas, ticks, ants and mosquitos. Cats also adore mint! Catnip is part of the mint family and is many a feline’s favourite plant.

Fleabane Daisies are adorable, easy to grow and help ward off fleas and ticks from around your home.

Chrysanthemums come in an array of colours and can help deter fleas, ticks, aphids, spider-mites, grasshoppers, cockroaches, bedbugs, silverfish, and bird lice.

Sage is an essential in the kitchen, but also deters fleas and ticks

Marigolds are great companion plants for your vegetable patch as they are especially good at protecting tomatoes but did you know that they also repel fleas, ticks, white flies and cabbage maggots?

Citronella Grass repels ticks, fleas, mosquitos, many other biting insects and has also been known to help calm barking dogs.

Alfalfa plants boost the health of your chickens because they are loaded with amino acids, protein, minerals and are an excellent source of chlorophyll.

Marjoram is a fantastic egg laying stimulant.

Chickweed is a green food tonic for chickens.

Bright and cheery Nasturtiums can boost your chicken’s health with their antiseptic and medicinal properties and are also great wormers for your flock.

Don’t eradicate this little gem from your garden. Dandelion leaves and flowers are a complete food and immune system booster for your chickens.
